UNIGLOBE Geo Travel's very own Luxury/Adventure Travel Specialist, Shirley Smith, returned home this week after a 2 week trip to Cambodia & Vietnam. Shirley shares her vacation experience with us:
Over the past few years my group escorting has been solely to the African Continent, South America and India. In an endeavor to offer my clients something different I have just returned from Vietnam and Cambodia. I needed to go and check things out prior to offering my next group tour to my clients which will be January 2010.
I must say they were never top of my list but after being there I have decided they are both fantastic destinations and I will thoroughly enjoy promoting it. Vietnam has only been open to tourism since 1990 and it is incredible how quickly they have adapted in offering a wide range of tourist experiences.
Both Vietnam and Cambodia have had tumultuous pasts with lots of outside and internal conflict. They are now however emerging as likely the newest "in place to travel". There is lots to offer from magnificent beach resorts along its 3000 km coast line to modern cities such as Saigon (Ho Chi Ming city) which is very cosmopolitan offering great hotels, restaurants and shopping. One of the highlights for me, though somewhat a sad experience was my visit the the Cu Chi Tunnel area in South Vietnam which was the major area affected during the Vietnam War between 1965 and 1973.
We viewed the underground tunnel complex which covers 155 miles across the South of Vietnam as far as the Cambodian border. These tunnels were built by the Viet Cong to aide in guerilla warfare, especially during the Vietnam war. It was estimated 10,000 Viet Cong lived underground during that time, coming out only at night when the American troops were unlikely to out.
The Angkor temples of Cambodia are breathtaking to say the least, the shear vastness of the Angkok Wat temple and the eerie, almost unreal feeling once gets when viewing the Ta Prohm Temple. The Ta Prohm temple was at one point completely covered by jungle but the French started their archaeological restoration during the colonial period. The temple buildings however still remain smothered with roots of giant banyan trees, preserving the atmosphere that the 19th century explorers must have experienced.
Fabulous things to see !!!!
